Bugged?
Yep! Your pet could be bugged?
But you can protect your pet from these insidious little creatures. Read on to find out about the most common ways your pet could be bugged!
Shhhhh some one might be listening!
External Parasites
Fleas
Fleas are the most common parasite found on dogs and cats. Fleas are small parasitic insects that jump onto the skin and coat of pets and feed on their blood. Heavy flea infestations can cause serious problems including anaemia in both puppies and dogs.
Ticks
Ticks are small to begin with, but as they feed, they grow and become fully engorged. Once they are fully engorged, they drop off. While dogs can contract ticks all year round, ‘tick season’ usually refers to the beginning of the spring period, around September, up until the beginning of summer.
Ear Mites
Ear mites look like minuscule crabs. Their preferred environment is your pet’s ear canal, although once in a while they venture out of the ear, moving to the head and body. They love to feed on the tissue debris and fluids inside the ear canal. They reproduce rapidly during a three-week life cycle.
Tip
An easy to give chewable product like NexGard or Bravecto can protect your pup from Fleas, Ticks and Mites! And dogs think they are yummy!
Internal Parasites
Tapeworms
Pets become infected with tapeworms after swallowing fleas. Because they’re irritating, some dogs will scoot, dragging their bottoms across the floor, or lick their behinds a lot.
Hookworms
The hookworm attaches to the lining of the intestinal wall and feeds on your dog’s blood. Its eggs are ejected into the digestive tract and pass into the environment through your dog’s faeces.
Roundworms
Roundworms are the most common internal parasite and are easily spread through infected faeces. They’re usually white or light brown and look like spaghetti. Adult animals are often asymptomatic but roundworms can be extremely harmful to young animals.
Heartworms
Heartworm is a parasitic worm that can infect your pet through a mosquito bite. Treatment can be extremely costly, and without medication heartworms are fatal. Good news – they’re almost 100% preventable.
Tip
A simple tablet can combat intestinal worms like, tapeworm, hookworm and Roundworms. For Heartworm – prevention is the best course of action. And it’s as easy as a yearly injection!
